Be a therapist-preneur

You graduate college after many years of studies, exams, and student debt now, and if you are like me, you did a licensure, which is more years, more studies and more exams after your graduate degree. All this education is worth it because it enriches your mind tremendously, but do you ever find yourself wanting more? More ways to influence the world, more money to pay off your debt, or to be part of a bigger project like humanitarian work in other countries or prevention of sex-trafficking of little kids etc.? As therapists we go into this career to make a difference by inspiring others and giving back to the world and I found myself feeling antsy to do more as I did therapy in a little square office with no windows. Don't get me wrong, I loved what I did as a full-time LCSW in a high risk neighborhood providing crisis intervention for troubled and suicidal teens. I knew I was making a difference in their lives and I loved that.

But I had 3 things that really bothered my mind.

  1. The system of prevention needed to be stronger to influence and empower these kids before they got to the point of suicide.
  2. Burn out in this field is high with heavy therapy topics and counseling emotionally all day Monday through Friday. I didn't know how I could do this type of work until I retired if I wanted a quality life for myself.
  3. Therapist income, let's face it, therapy jobs don't make a lot of money, and I was tired of feeling financially strapped.
Have you ever felt like this? Have you felt you wanted to do more for the profession, make more money and retire yourself early? Well I had that desire and I was determined to find a way to make it happen.

I knew the main place to make more money and to create more freedom to effect changes, came from one industry, and that was business, or being an entrepreneur. I had the same thoughts and feelings that many of you have; "I'm a therapist, I'm not an entrepreneur, I wouldn't know where to start". It can be scary at first to put yourself out there and make a shift in your career, but you got started in this career path because you love to help people, which is why a therapist-preneur partnership is the best vehicle to expand your influence, and inspire globally changes that only you can bring because of who you are. Being a therapist-preneur allows you the unlimited potential for income, and that creates not only freedom in your life but to make a difference in the world in a bigger way.

My story

My name is Danielle Daniel, and I got my Masters of Social Work from San Diego State and became an LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) a few years later. I started feeling there was more to life than tho work, eat, sleep and repeat, plus living on limited income and day in and day out the same office. Also quantity of care seemed to be more important to admin than quality of care, and I found myself doing more required paperwork than client time and staying late or coming in early just to catch up and fulfill agency "quotas". Any of this sound familiar to you? My job wasn't all bad, I loved my co-workers and the patients I saw, but I knew I wanted to do more.

Essential Oils

One day, my best friend told me about a company of essential oils that were such high quality they were using them in hospitals, research, and medical practices. I had used oils, but never were they that effective to bring them into my practice. So I bought some oils from the company through her, and started using them in my practice. I couldn't believe the response I was getting from my teenage kids, who would come in moody or angry and with the use of lavender or orange essential oils their emotions improved and the therapy session improved. I'll never forget one girl I had been seeing for months for anxious emotions and trouble in school. She would never smile, felt stressed and anxious frequently and did not like to be in school. She started using a blend for the digestive system, since that was a big source of her stress, and the next week she came in my office, she had progressed more so than the 4 months I had seen her. She was smiling, and had a better outlook on life and was able to focus well in school and feel calm. I looked at this bottle of oil and I knew more people needed to have these in their homes and therapy offices because there was something big to it that I alone could not do as a therapist without this natural tool.

Retire Early

I began from that point on to build a business model around educating people on what are essential oils, how to use them, and how to manage mood and emotions with them. I now have partnered with many therapists and other health advocates implementing this entrepreneur model and in 2 years of building my therapist-preneur business on the side of my full-time job, I replaced my income and retired myself from working for somebody else ever again. My income from there has soared 1000 times more than a annual 2% merit raise, that much I will tell you, and because I work for myself, I have been able to participate on humanitarian trips in other countries, as well as partner with rehabilitation for sex-trafficking, and start my own humanitarian foundation for prevention of sexual abuse. If any of this speaks to your heart, then this career pathway is for you. Even if you think, right now, I want to stay at my job but just want to earn a little extra income to pay my mortgage or for a trip etc., then this pathway is for you. As a therapist-preneur you can create whatever level of income, involvement, and projects you want, and my partnership will coach you to do just what your heart desires.

How it works

Whether you are a therapist, psychologist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, nurse, nutritionist, or any other health care related field, you can be successful at this. I coach women who are also personal trainers, massage therapists, yogi's and even veterinarian technicians. I work with motivated and driven women who have a desire to help others, and use their knowledge and expertise to make a bigger difference in the world. The entrepreneurial piece you add into your career is the essential oils, learning about them, using them and then educating others about them. From your product recommendations as you help people with their wellness goals, they purchase the oils from the company. In return, because it was your referral, the company pays you for the referral. Every time these people continue to purchase from the company, you continue to get paid. As you grow your clientele base, your income grows and becomes residual so that you get paid whether you work or not one day. Way different from having to clock in or show up to get paid and trading time for dollars. What I love about this model, is that you can stay authentic to yourself, be you, use your health expertise, plus build a business that is completely aligned with who you are. This is about worker smarter, not harder and giving yourself the future where you can spend more time doing what you love with out the financial stress.
